Texas officials say an 18-year-old man armed with a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a high-capacity magazine shot his grandmother at another location before driving away in a mass shooting on the morning of May 24.
He then crashed his car near Robb Elementary School, and as he got out of his car and headed toward the School, he was confronted by officers who opened fire, but were unable to stop the killer from entering the School and shooting at teachers and students.
It was at least the second fatal shooting in the United States this month, following a deadly shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, on May 15 that left one person dead.
Pete Arredondo, police chief for the Uvalde Independent School District, said investigators believe the attacker “acted alone in this heinous crime” after the shooting began at 11:32 a.m. Tuesday.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the gunman, Salvador Ramos, left a car before entering the school and opened fire in a “horrific and incomprehensible manner.”
U.S. media reported that the teacher who was shot dead was Eva Mireles. She works as a fourth grade teacher at Robb Elementary School, mentoring 9 – and 10-year-olds. On her page on the school district’s website, she says she has a college-aged daughter who loves to run and hike.
Robb Elementary, about 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of San Antonio, is a predominantly Hispanic school with nearly 500 students.
The Associated Press reports that a U.S. Border Patrol officer who was nearby at the time of the shooting burst into the school and shot and killed the gunman who was hiding behind a barricade.
The Border Patrol is a federal agency that protects America’s ports of entry. Uvalde, less than 80 miles from the Mexican border, is home to a Border Patrol station.
Two border guards were reportedly shot during an exchange of fire with the gunmen. One border Patrol agent was shot in the head, the official said, adding that both were now in hospital in stable condition.
According to CBS News, the attacker was wearing body armor when he opened fire. Another 18-year-old suspected of attacking a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, on May 14 was also wearing body armor and carrying a semi-automatic rifle — both of which are available in the United States.
Uvalde Memorial Hospital earlier said in a Facebook post that 13 children had been taken to the hospital “by ambulance or bus.”
