Police won’t allow Bao Longjun, detained on suspicion of the crime of endangering national security, to meet with his lawyers

Boxun has learned that on Friday August 28, 2015, Bao Longjun’s defense attorneys Huang Hanzhong and Chen Yongfu received the Tianjin Public Security Bureau’s Hexi Branch Office “Decision refusing their requested meeting with their [alleged criminal] client.” Long-incommunicado Bao Longjun is alleged to have committed the crime of endangering national security. The police won’t let him meet with his lawyers.

The Decision said: “Because Bao Longjun’s alleged crime of subverting state power belongs to the category of endangering national security, a meeting with his lawyers might impede the investigation or reveal state secrets. According to the provisions of Article 37, Paragraph 3 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the decision has been made to refuse Bao Longjun’s request to meet with his lawyers.”

Up to 5 p.m. Friday August 28, 2015, none of the 17 civil rights lawyers, legal assistants, and law firm staff who were arrested en masse on July 10, 2015 have been permitted to meet with lawyers.
