We note Beijing Qianqi Law Firm’s attorney Li Guobei’s letter to “Boxun Network” (full text attached). Boxun News Network (the “Boxun Network” referred to in the attorney’s letter) issues the following statement regarding the reprint of Wang Qiaoling’s article:

1. Boxun News Network reprinted the article: “Tianjin, Keep Looking for Attorney Li Heping” and Miss Wang Qiaoling’s civil complaint suing the official Xinhua News Service, People’s Daily, and nine other major defendants for damaging her reputation. Boxun acquired this information from a third party source and validated its authenticity.

2. Boxun News Network pays the highest attention to the unfortunate situation of Miss Wang Qiaoling and her husband attorney Li Heping. We believe that from the time attorney Li Heping was forcibly disappeared until now Miss Wang Qiaoling has gone through proper channels to search for her husband, and has publicly documented the process. And because her reputation has been damaged she is suing the Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily and other nine defendants. This seems reasonable, legitimate and fair.

3. Boxun News Network publishes every day and reprints many signed articles. It also frequently reprints the speeches and instructions of Communist Party leader Xi Jinping and Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun. For the Tianjin Public Security Bureau to use Boxun’s publishing of her related articles to detain Miss Wang Qiaoling is beyond absurd. We vehemently condemn the PRC judiciary’s criminal detention of Miss Wang Qiaoling. If people should be subpoenaed for having their articles republished, shouldn’t the Tianjin Public Security Bureau also subpoena Xi Jinping and Guo Shengkun? We vehemently condemn the illegal group detention of China’s civil rights lawyers. These recent actions represent a serious setback for China’s pursuit of rule of law.
