Wang Yu charged with subversion, denied a lawyer

On Friday, August 7, 2015, Wang Yu’s lawyer Li Yuhan received from the Tianjin Public Security Bureau Hexi police station its “decision to not allow attorney to meet criminal suspect.” Wang Yu confirms she’s been formally arrested for the criminal charge of “inciting subversion of state power,” and doesn’t know when she’ll be permitted to meet with her attorney.

The “Decision” said: Because Wang Yu’s charge of suspicion of inciting subversion of state power falls under the rubric of endangerment of national security, and seeing an attorney has the potential to obstruct the investigation or reveal state secrets, in accordance with the rules detailed in criminal code article 37 clause number 3, we won’t permit the criminal suspect to meet with her attorney.

At midnight on July 9, 2015, police opened the front door of attorney Wang Yu’s home. Her husband and son were also taken into detention at the airport. After this, many requests by her lawyer to see her have been denied.
