Software engineer is sentenced to 12 years in prison

China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday August 4, 2015 reported the court decision that 41-year-old computer engineer Wang Yibo was sentenced to 12 years in prison for disseminating subversive information.

Wang Yibo was a software engineer at Beijing’s NDS Corporation. One Friday last August, while hundreds of thousands of television viewers were watching “Chinese Idol,” a series of slogans condemning the Chinese Communist Party suddenly appeared on their television screens. These slogans included: “End brutal communist Mafia rule!” “Establish democratic government” and “The Communist Mafia government is the axis of evil in the universe!” Wang Yibo was charged with trespassing and embedding “harmful information” in user set-top boxes, resulting in nearly 500,000 cable television viewers in Wenzhou seeing these slogans.
