Four children die after drinking pesticide

Seven Star District, Huajie City, Guizhou Province: A government website says that on the night of Tuesday, June 9, 2015, four children drank pesticide to kill themselves. They couldn’t be resuscitated and were pronounced dead.

The oldest was a boy, 13, with three sisters. The youngest child was 5. Their father, Zhang Fangqi, left several months ago to find work as a migrant laborer. Their mother left three years ago. The grandfather and grandmother are deceased. The maternal grandparents are still alive, but they’re very old and can’t care for children. So these four children were left at home alone.

According to reports, a month ago the four children dropped out of school because they lacked living expenses. The family’s only food is the corn they grew last year. Normally, the four children grind the corn into cornmeal, sieve it clean, and then eat it. Rural children whose parents have left villages to find work in the cities are known as “left-behind children.”
