Yao ethnic minority disaster victims demonstrate and are violently attacked by police

Because compensation funds were embezzled from the Caotan Village, Wujiang Township, Jianghua County, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province Centianhe Reservoir expansion project, a large number of villagers haven’t been relocated. On Wednesday May 20, 2015, after days of torrential rain, the reservoir had no place to drain and it flooded the village, leaving the villagers homeless.

On the morning of Saturday May 23, 2015 hundreds of villagers carried protest banners and marched to the Jianghua County government headquarters demanding their problem be addressed. En route a large number of police intercepted and violently attacked them. Senior citizens and women were among the many injured, and at least 18 were arrested. That afternoon villagers continued to go the Jianghua County government headquarters to protest.

Villager “Meisha New Bride Wedding Dress Photo” said: “Two senior citizens in their 80s were seeking justice at the county government headquarters’ entrance, nothing more. Their son is seriously injured and being treated in the hospital. They have no home to return to, they can only pass the long night here. They don’t know what their fate will be, no one knows….
