On Wednesday May 27, 2015, the sole defendant in the “Zhengzhou Ten Gentlemen” case, former Guangzhou 1989 student movement leader Yu Shiwen took the opportunity of meeting with his lawyer to issue a six-point statement. The main contents include:

1. Thank you to everyone at home and abroad who’s expressed concern about the “Zhengzhou Ten Gentlemen” case. The Zhengzhou, Henan Province public security organs have established a several-hundred person special investigation team. For more than 100 days the legitimate rights of parties to hire lawyers has been denied. The several-hundred person task force works weekends and holidays preparing to break a so-called “major case.”

2. I’m willing to go to prison to draw attention to the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

3. I won’t speak a word in court and will maintain silence. My silence and refusal to cooperate will express my strongest opposition to this illegal trial!

4. I have written my own defense statement and will make it public before the trial.

5. Regarding the judiciary’s sole charge that “Yu Shiwen did not get the permission of a number of signatories before signing their names, and wasn’t empowered to print or make the petition public,” the authorities wanted to kill two birds with one stone: Frame me as guilty, and divide those memorializing the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

6. I reserve the right to lifelong prosecution against the prosecutors of my case Zhao Xiaoyu and Ms. Ma Xiaolin.
