Villagers demonstrating to blockade construction of crematorium violently attacked by police

To protest government construction of a waste incinerator and crematorium, hundreds of villagers in Shanzipo Village, Hejiang Township, Huazhou City, Guangdong Province began protesting on Friday May 8, 2015. They blocked traffic near the village and the demonstration is presently continuing.

On the afternoon of Monday May 11, 2015, the hundreds of protesting villagers were suddenly violently attacked by the police. More than 100 police entered the village firing tear gas and beating villagers to disperse them. As a result at least five villagers were injured and at least three were arrested. That evening the villagers continued to demonstrate late into the evening, encircling the Hejiang Township government headquarters and demanding that the government release the detained villagers. The two sides remain in confrontation now.
