Boxun’s correspondent has learned that, due to his initiation of a “One Person One Photograph Solidarity With Gao Yu” campaign, democratic activist Shen Liangqing of Hefei, Anhui Province was detained by the authorities for 13 days. At 1 a.m. on Wednesday May 6, 2015, he called his son and told him he’d been sentenced to 13 days detention. His family has still not received any detention notice, and are still not sure of the specific reason for his detention.

His friend Yin Chun received a phone call from Shen Liangqing’s son explaining that before 9 a.m. on Tuesday May 5, 2015, Shen was taken away by police and charged with the crime of “inciting ethnic hatred.” Shen Liangqing recently told friends that he had launched on social media the photo campaign to demand the release of imprisoned female journalist Gao Yu, and that it might cause him trouble. But this doesn’t seem to have anything to do with “inciting ethnic hatred.”

Shen Liangqing is a Mainland China-based democracy activist. He has been a longtime online critic of the Chinese Communist Party’s single-party dictatorship, and for this reason has long been subjected to police harassment and surveillance. He received a criminal summons for expressing his support of Hong Kong’s Occupy Central movement and exercising his right to free speech.
