On Sunday March 29, 2015 at 5 a.m., a Hengshui Number Two Middle School senior-year student jumped to his death. The school didn’t notify the family until nearly 8 a.m. Last year in October, a female student jumped to her death at this same school.
To prevent anyone else from jumping, the middle school installed iron railings on all the floors of the classroom building, rendering it no different from a prison.
Hengshui High School, Hengshui Number Two Middle School, and Maotanchang Middle School in Anhui Province represent an education model that’s been controversial. They’re often referred to as “College Entrance Exam Processing Centers” and “Concentration Camps for Middle School Students.”
A netizen commented: “This kind of medicine, only treating the symptoms instead the cause, is it good?” In my eyes, the only useful education is setting an example of civilized behavior. This kind of barbarism cannot be called education. Instead of installing iron railings to prevent people jumping, perhaps they should reflect on why so many people want to jump.” (BOXUN Translation)
