Chinese social media is carrying reports that Zhou Yongkang, the former chief of domestic security who was expelled from the Party and arrested for corruption, also leaked the contents of private talks between former North Korean official Jang Sung-taek and former Chinese President Hu Jintao. This resulted in North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un summarily executing Jang and turning completely hostile toward China. Zhou revealed that when there was only a translator present, Jang and Hu Jintao secretly discussed for an hour the possibility of the more reform-minded half-brother Kim Jong-nam replacing Kim Jong-un. Hu could not commit to a course of action. Zhou’s revelation resulted in the annihilation of the whole “pro-China” faction in North Korea, but one “Deep Throat” survived, successfully fled to China and provided this account.

Boxun’s Hong Kong reporter received confirmation of this from an informed insider. Zhou Yongkang intended to flee to North Korea, but was not able to carry this out.

Jang Sung-taek led a delegation to China on August 13, 2012. In Beijing, he was on the steering committee of the third meeting between the two sides regarding the two countries’ jointly developing and managing the DPRK Rason Economic and Trade Zone, and the Hwanggumpyong Island and Wihwa Island economic zones.

On August 17, 2012, President Hu Jintao met Jang in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. Jan was the North Korea Workers’ Party Central Committee Chief Minister. Here is the official photograph from the meeting:

On December 8, 2013, at an enlarged meeting of the Politburo of the Worker’s Party of Korea Jang was arrested. On December 12, 2013, Jang was sentenced to death and immediately executed. This is the first time in 16 years that a senior-level North Korean Politburo member was executed. It attracted much outside attention.

South Korean media reported that North Korea’s second most powerful leader Jang Sung-taek attempted to usurp power from Kim Jong-un and to replace him with the eldest son of Kim Jong-il, Kim Jung-nam. This effort met tragic failure.

On December 26, 2013, BBC reported that Japan-related analysts say Kim Jong-un’s arrest and execution of Jang Sung-taek dissatisfied Xi Jinping. North Korea made repeated attempts to arrange a trip to China for Kim Jong-un, but this effort hasn’t succeeded.
