The 31-year-old IT professional who developed software to circumvent China’s Great Firewall Internet surveillance and control system was released from prison on bail.

Xu Dong also had published opinions supporting the Occupy Central protest movement in Hong Kong. Police from the Beijing Western District Deshengmen station detained him on Nov. 4, 2014  on suspicion of “creating a disturbance.” He was held in the Beijing Number One Detention Center.

According to knowledgeable sources, after Xu Dong was detained the police threatened his friends not to publicize the matter, or else he would also be charged with collaborating with hostile foreign forces in developing his software.

Xu Dong wasn’t allowed to be visited by his attorney while in the detention center.
