Villagers surround industrial park to protest acrid fumes

Quzhou, Guantao and Guangping counties, Handan City, Hebei Province: A chemical factory in an industrial park has been secretly releasing acrid poisonous gas in the night. In addition, the cancer rate in surrounding villages has skyrocketed. On Dec. 26, 2014, at a temple on the periphery of the park, more than 1,000 people from East Road Village, West Road Village and others surrounded the industrial park and obstructed traffic. Their protests have continued since then and some protesters have been arrested.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015,  hundreds of villagers went to the Qingdao-Lanzhou Expressway near the industrial park and obstructed traffic while demanding that their fellow villagers be released. Police forcibly dispersed them. Four villagers were arrested.
