Police thwart protesters of Shenzhen waste burning plant

Longgang residential district, Shenzhen: Since November 2014, residents have repeatedly protested construction of a plant able to burn 5,000 tons of garbage daily. On Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, thousands of residents marched to the Shenzhen Residents’ Center, carrying banners such as one that said: “Oppose waste incineration, we demand the right to healthy life.” Police seized the banners and dispersed protesters. Many protesters were arrested.

Eyewitness netizen “cxjlove” said: News media arriving on the scene were forcibly taken away. The motor vehicles of petitioners were forcibly pushed away. The protest banners were all confiscated. Still and video photographers were all taken away. The police blocked vehicles and prevented protesters from exiting their cars. This led to residents fainting in the confusion. The residents who did manage to get out of their cars were forced back into them by police, there are many protesters still missing…..
