Thousands of teachers in three provinces and six cities demonstrate demanding pay raise

On Saturday December 27, 2014, thousands of teachers in Henan Province’s Xinyang City, Xi County, Shangcheng County, and Luoshan County, Anhui Province’s Ma’anshan City, He County, and Hanshan County, and Jiangxi Province’s Nanchang City—altogether six cities—initiated protests and independently gathered at local government headquarters to protest government embezzlement of their salaries. During these protests Annhui Province He County and Henan Province Shangcheng County teachers were arrested.

On Saturday December 27, 2014, teachers from Henan Province’s Xinyang City, Xi County, Shangcheng County, and Luoshan County went to local gov headquarters to protest the embezzling of their salaries and demand an increase in pay. Hundreds of Xi County and Shangcheng County teachers demonstrated and were violently attacked by police. Four were arrested. Luoshan County teachers have been protesting for two days, more than 1,000 are now protesting.

On the same day, Anhui province Ma’anshan City, He County, and Hanshan County teachers went to local government headquarters to protest and demand a raise in pay. Hundreds of He County teachers went to the county government headquarters to protest and were met with violent repression, many were beaten and arrested. More than 1,000 teachers In Hanshan County have been collectively protesting at the county government headquarters for five days.

Due to government embezzlement of their salaries, teachers in Jiangxi Province’s Nanchang City, Xinjian County, Anyi County, Nanchang County, Jinxian County and Jingkai District successively went on strike from Tuesday December 23, 2014 until Saturday December 27, 2014. There are still more than 100 teachers collectively protesting at the Jiangxi Province government headquarters.
