Nearly 1,000 protesting teachers beaten and arrested

Nearly 1,000  teachers demonstrated in Tongling County, Anhui Province on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014 to protest the beating and arrest of their colleagues, who had been demanding higher salaries and payment of bonuses withheld by the government since 2009.

About 300 teachers took the lead in initiating the protest. They went to the Tongling municipal government headquarters to sit-in and were confronted by anti-riot police. Many teachers were injured and three were arrested.

An eyewitness said that police confiscated phones of those filming the protest. Of the three who were arrested, two were women and one was a man. Three people’s armed police surrounded and beat one female teacher.

That afternoon, after learning that the protesting teachers were being beaten, teachers from middle and primary schools all over the county went on strike, and nearly 1,000 went to Tongling municipal government headquarters to protest.
