Lu Shishen is an old netizen friend of Boxun whose word we consider reliable. He recently contacted us with the account of an anonymous soldier who participated in the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. This may be the first revelation of how the Chinese government disposed of the bodies of citizens killed by the Peoples Liberation Army.

Here is the soldier’s confession:

“I participated in the Tiananmen Massacre. That experience has been a nightmare I can’t forget.

“After the massacre, our company spent two successive days and a night disposing of corpses. Corpses were passed through the sewers from the ground of Tiananmen Square. After a corpse was sent down, it was placed in a cotton bag, which was then tied with a rope and passed to soldiers, who stood in a line in the sewers. I don’t know what was done with those corpses or where they were taken.

“I was not yet 20 years old then. Three months after we left Tiananmen and returned to our base, all the soldiers who participated in this work were forced to retire instead of being demobilized. As retirees, we continue to receive pensions. Before leaving the army, we were ordered to not discuss this with anyone. Those who leaked the secret would be killed with no question.

“Since then, quite a number of my comrades-in-arms have gone crazy. Quite a few couldn’t take the mental torment and killed themselves.

“These years I’ve had insomnia and nightmares. This is the first time I’ve talked about my experience to outsiders.”
