Boxun has learned that Shaanxi Province petitioner Lu Dongli was arrested by the Beijing, Fengtai District police on Tuesday, Nov. 11. According to sources, Lu’s alleged crime was illegal possession of espionage materials. He’s now being held in the Fengtai Detention Center. The source pointed out that Lu’s arrest could be related to Boxun’s video showing Lu being arrested on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014.

Lu escaped his detention on Friday, Nov. 7, when a police officer and two Petition Bureau staff members left to eat. A Boxun reporter contacted Lu on the night of Sunday, Nov. 9,  asking him if he’d already been repatriated to Shaanxi Province. He told the reporter: “I escaped, I’m still in Beijing.”

Lu Dongli, a petitioner himself, has generously helped other petitioners. He’s very well trusted in the petitioner community. After he disappeared and his arrest was confirmed, many petitioners appealed for his release and prayed for him.

An average protester being accused of “spying” by the Chinese police shows that the recent large-scale arrests of rights defenders, human rights lawyers, political dissidents, and artists is part of an increasingly autocratic attack on freedom of expression, and says clearly that China’s human rights situation is continuing to deteriorate. Boxun will continue to pay close attention to the Lu Dongli “spying case.”
