Yaotun Village, West Lake Office, Changfu District, Liao City, Shandong Province: Villagers in October began protesting the government’s forced renting of their land for the below-market price of ¥800 per mu in order to repair a road. They started carrying protest banners to the occupied land and preventing construction work from starting.

Between October 26 and November 12, 2014, villagers and local government had several sharp conflicts. The police used tear gas and pepper spray against the protesters.

On Friday, November 14, hundreds of villagers went to West Lake police station and the municipal government headquarters to protest.

A villager said: “The municipal Party committee used organized crime thugs, threw tear gas, sprayed pepper spray, beat and arrested people. This is the government. Now 30 people have been arrested.”
