Yantian Port, Shenzhen: On the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, traffic police on Pearl Avenue began fining truck drivers for illegal parking. This made drivers angry. Authorities in Yantian have closed many parking lots to make room for more construction. Drivers, whose trucks haul huge containers, have been forced to park along the road and police have ticketed them. To protest, more than a thousand drivers parked their trucks to block vehicles from entering or leaving the port, obstructing Pearl Avenue.
The work action continued until early the following morning. The local government dispatched a large number of police to disperse the striking drivers.
In September 2013, because of low wages and the company not honoring its commitment to provide school stipends to workers’ children, 800 gantry crane operators in Yantian Port went on strike for two days.
