Shanghai Kangjun Health Spa Corporation, a chain with more than 60 outlets, went bankrupt recently. More than 2000 workers are owed three months’ salary. The workers went to the Labor Bureau and the Shanghai Municipal Government Headquarters seeking compensation but didn’t succeed.

On the morning of Saturday October 4, 2014, more than 2000 workers once more collectively went to the Shanghai Municipal Government Headquarters to sit-in. They held banners saying: “Kangjun is maliciously in arrears on salary, return my sweat and blood.” They called on the government to assist them but were instead violently attacked by police. Many were beaten and more than 20 people were arrested. Hundreds were treated for injuries and detained until the afternoon.
