A year ago, Zheng Qiuwu and his wife were framed by the authorities on the criminal charge of “selling toxic and poisonous food.” Four months after being detained, on October 1, 2013, they were granted bail by the Wenchang City, Hainan Province Public Security Bureau. One year has passed. On September 10, 2014, Zheng Qiuwu and his wife were notified by the Wenchang Municipal procuratorate that their bail period was being extended. The notice said: The case of Zheng Qiuwu and his wife Chen Aiqiong, suspected of “selling toxic and poisonous food,” is entering the investigation stage. Their bail is to be extended and the period of investigation will be one month, ending on October 1, 2014.

Zheng Qiuwu is a veteran Chinese political activist. After graduating from university in 1983 he founded the political party the Democratic Alliance of China. As a result, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He never gave up his pursuit of constitutional democracy. He became a thorn in the regime’s side, and they had to trump up criminal charges against him. In May 2013, because Zheng Qiuwu dared to go look for work in Hangzhou during the police-imposed travel restriction period leading up to the anniversary of the June 4 Tiananmen massacre, he was pursued by the Hainan police across provincial lines, arrested, and framed with the criminal charge.

According to China’s criminal procedure code, the bail period should not last longer than one year.
