(BOXUN) In Boluo County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, the government plans to build a 2600-ton-a-day waste incinerating power plant. Because it will greatly impact Boluo, Huizhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong citizens who use East River water, citizens have recently staged several small-scale protests. On Saturday September 13, 2014 at 9 a.m. approximately 20,000 citizens carried banners reading: “Love Boluo, Cancel the Incinerator Project” and protest marched in the city. A large number of police were dispatched to intercept the marchers. At approximately 11 a.m. the protesters were violently dispersed by the police. Many citizens were beaten and injured by the police. At least 16 were arrested.

The site of the proposed plant is Luoyang. Immediately to its west is Boluo County. The Canton-Huizhou Expressway is 600 meters away, and the East River is 1600 meters away. The waste discharge is cancer-causing and will greatly influence citizens of Boluo, Huizhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong who use East River water.

This afternoon there are still a large number of citizens in Culture Square demonstrating, calling for the release of the arrested citizens.
