Hundreds of Police in Sanya City, Hainan Province Confiscate Beach Property and Arrest Protesting Villagers

In Maling Village, Tianya Township, Sanya City, Hainan Province, the government took over a beach. Other than paying a below-market rate for villagers’ boats, the government offered no compensation and required the villagers to pay ¥20,000 to become shareholders. On Tuesday September 9, 2014 they sent hundreds of police to violently repress a protest by the villagers. On Wednesday September 10, 2014, after confronting each other for two days, two villagers were arrested.

Tianya Township, Sanya City villagers have relied on the sea for their livelihood for generations. The local government suddenly commandeered a large section of the famous Tianya Haijiao (Separated Worlds Apart) Beach and only offered a small amount of compensation for the use of the villagers’ boats. Other than that there was no compensation. They also made the villagres go into debt to become shareholders. With only the agreement of a small number of villagers, the government sent armed paramilitary police officers and men in to violently repress the villagers and build a wharf there.
