300 Henan province villagers shot by police while lying on train tracks in protest

The government in Jiao Village, Liucun Township, Neihuang County, Anyang City, Henan Province didn’t accord with blueprints in transforming an overpass into a tunnel. Fearing this would jeopardize their safety, at 6 a.m. on Thursday September 4 300 villagers sat in protest and blocked the Tangpu railway line. They continued until 10 a.m. when hundreds of police arrived to break up the protest. More than 10 villagers were beaten and arrested, one villager was shot and injured by police.

According to reports, the Jiao Village tunnel filled with water as soon as it rained. There was no proper drainage. The grade is steep and in the next village this had already resulted in three deaths. So the villagers self-organized a protest to leave their progeny with a safe road and bridge.
