The large-scale removal of crosses on Christian churches in China’s Zhejiang Province has intensified. Last month Chinese Christians resisted two church demolitions that resulted in bloody clashes at Jiu’en Church in Pingyang County in Wenzhou. In the early morning of Thursday August 14 the authorities finally succeeded in removing a cross in the name of “removing illegal structures.” On the evening of Tuesday August 12, Hangzhou’s Drum Tower Church cross was also forcibly removed. The authorities mobilized nearly 1,000 police and riot squad members to control the believers. There were many arrests.
