On Wednesday August 13 in Qinghai Province, Haidong Municipality, Hualong Hui Muslim Autonomous County, Bayan Township, Racecourse Mountain Village, village officials secretly sold the mountain. The government sent a large number of police and urban control officers to encircle the local power plant. Villagers went to oppose this and met with violent repression. Many were wounded, two seriously, and many were arrested. During the conflict a county chief fired five shots to frighten the villagers.
The villagers created a human wall. The village head said “We’ve already seized the mountain,” and police began beating the villagers who were huddled together. They terrorized, threatened, hit and simply behaved as bandits.
Everyone was either beaten or arrested, including 80-year-old grandfathers go and 2-year-old children. Villagers were able to rescue those who were still able to speak. But four were sent to the hospital. Finally, with no alternative, a 70-year-old grandfather laid on the ground in front of the police vehicles.
In addition to Hui Muslims, the autonomous county under the jurisdiction of Haidong Municipality in eastern Qinghai Province also includes Han, Tibetan and Sala ethnic minorities.
