Heavy equipment kills Chinese protester, but police make no arrest

On May 5 in Tieling of Liaoning Province, a man protesting and trying to stop construction on his land died after a piece of heavy construction equipment ran over him. Police were on the site but they did not arrest anyone.

Land confiscation and forced demolition of houses have led to other deaths in China, including self-immolations, when people try to protest. Developers work closely with local government officials, who depend heavily on revenue from real estate transactions.
