Hu Jintao Trying on a Minority Hat Cannot Cover-Up the Bad Blood Between Hans and Uighurs

Boxun reports that from August 23-25–more than a month after the July 5 violence in Xinjiang–Hu Jintao arrived in Urumqi for an inspection tour. Chinese state media gave his trip the usual treatment, showing President Hu with brightly-clothed happy ethnic minorities. They even gave him one of their ceremonial hats, which Hu duly tried on and was portrayed wearing in photos and on television nationwide. The clear message was that the bloody events of July 5 were put permanently in the past and China’s various ethnic minorities were back to their usual harmonious relationship. This not only did not fool anyone, but disrespected and exacerbated the bad blood between the Uighurs and Hans.
