Boxun reports that Uighur economist Professor Ilham Tohti has been released by Beijing authorities. The Internet activist was detained after a deadly uprising in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, in early July.

The 39-year-old Tohti founded and ran the website Uighur Online, a popular forum for members of the ethnic community native to Xinjiang, formerly East Turkestan. After the July events, Xinjiang’s governor Nur Bekri charged that the site had helped spark the unrest by spreading rumors. The website was shutdown in early July and has remained offline since.
