But recently Central Committee Propaganda Bureau chief Liu Yunshan was attending a meeting and took the opportunity to make several comments regarding the letter:

“Retired cadres have proper channels through which to comment on our work. They don’t need to and should not publish their criticisms on the Internet or in foreign countries. We should identify who first posted this on the Internet. That the Communist Party must lead China is enshrined in our constitution. Our democracy is different from that of countries in the West. There can be many different kinds of democracy. Democracy is not solely comprised of elections and holding elections does not automatically equate to democracy. Our Party has gone through changes at specific junctures of history, but our objective has never changed.”
