How Much Good Will Can 45 Billion Yuan (US$6.6 Billion) Buy China’s Government?

Boxun reports that Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post on Friday February 13 stated China’s central government is preparing to spend 45 billion yuan (US$6.6 billion) on expanding the international reach of its mainstream media in order to improve China’s international image.

Will these new international outlets be more free to report than China’s quasi-official Hong Kong-based Phoenix Satellite Television is at present?

China’s official Xinhua News Agency is preparing to launch an Asia-based 24-hour news channel modeled after the “influential and authoritative” CNN and Qatar’s Al-Jazeera. It is reported that the new station will be given more leeway to cover politically sensitive news than Phoenix is at present.

In this vein, the highly nationalistic Global Times newspaper published by the Peoples Daily Publishing Group is preparing to publish an English-language edition beginning in May.
