Chen Yunfei formally arrested on “suspicion of inciting subversion of state power.”

Boxun’s correspondent learned that because of renowned Chengdu democracy activist Chen Yunfei’s participation in a memorial ceremony for the victims of the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, he was detained on Thursday March 26, 2015 by the Xinjin County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province Public Security Bureau on “suspicion of the crime of inciting subversion of state power.” He’s being held in the Xinjin County Detention Center.

After Chen Yunfei was taken away on Wednesday March 25, 2015, his friends and attorneys repeatedly went to the Xinjin County Public Security Bureau to inquire about his well-being. But the Xinjin County Public Security Bureau refused to acknowledge that they were holding him. After Chen Yunfei had been detained for 10 days, his family on Monday April 6, 2015 received a formal arrest notice. But the arrest notice listed Friday April 3, 2015 as the day he was detained. This represents a serious violation of the law by the Xinjin County Public Security Bureau.

After Chen Yunfei was detained, Boxun’s correspondent surmised that Chen had been arrested on the criminal charge of “inciting subversion of state power.” Boxun’s correspondent once again appeals to concerned individuals both abroad and at home to continue to pay close attention to Chen Yunfei’s case.

In this regard, well-known human rights activist Hu Jia, said: “Self-identified ‘Animal Tamer’ activist Chen Yunfei, after disappearing for several days, confirmed that on Thursday March 26, 2015 he was criminally detained by the Sichuan Province Public Security Bureau of Internal Security for the crimes of creating a public disturbance and inciting subversion of state power. Sichuan is a ‘center of subversion’ and Chen Yunfei is the regime’s newest target. Like renowned rights defense lawyer Pu Zhiqiang’s case, this also equates political activism with criminal action.”
