More than 10,000 teachers strike in Heilongjiang Province

Teacher strikes in Heilongjiang Province over low wages have continued to escalate. After last week’s strike by 8,000 teachers in Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province, this week more than 10,000 teachers in three cities and counties successively went on strike. Many protesting teachers were beaten and arrested by police.

On Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, 6,000 teachers in Shuangcheng District, Harbin City went on strike and for three days gathered at the Shuangcheng district government headquarters. More than 20 protesters were arrested by police.

Protesting teacher “Username 536142959” said: “It’s the third day of the Shuangcheng District teachers’ protest. The government still hasn’t communicated with the teachers, but yesterday’s arrest of protesters has not been repeated today.”

Starting on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 26,  4,000 teachers in Yilan County, Harbin City protested. They gathered at the Yilan County government headquarters, where many were beaten and arrested by police.

The same morning in Shangzhi District, Harbin City, approximately 3,000 teachers gathered at the municipal government headquarters.
