Lingbi County, Suqian City, Anhui Province: On Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, a man named Zheng Xueqiang was killed during the demolition at 3 a.m. of the Wenzhou Shopping Center. The real estate developer who tore down the building offered the man’s family compensation of ¥100,000. A netizen posted this comment: “I don’t know how someone could be so shameless…in their eyes a worker is only worth this much, also not worth much in the government’s eyes. But this family has lost its heaven.”

At noon on Tuesday, Nov. 18, about 200 police officers arrived at the mourning ceremony, which apparently was set up on the site of the demolished shopping center. Police confiscated the corpse, while family members were beaten and arrested.

(Copy editor’s note: It isn’t clear from the English translation of this article why the man was in the shopping center at 3 a.m., or whether he worked there. Many Chinese in low-paying jobs live at their workplaces, so that may have been the case here.)
