(BOXUN) Victims of a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in early August in Ludian County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province marched on Saturday, August 23 to protest low resettlement allowances. More than 100 villagers from Dragon Head Mountain and Lehong Township brought protest banners to the man-made lake in the county town and to county government offices to demonstrate. They consider the government’s settlement allowance unjust. The villagers maintain that after the earthquake the living expense allowance was set at Y25 per day. But some villagers are receiving no allowance or only Y7-8 per day, and the government is requiring them to dig out their houses in order to receive the allowance. The earthquake caused 617 deaths.
