Democratic U.S. Representative John Khanna announced Friday he will lead a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers to Taiwan starting February 18 to strengthen ties between Silicon Valley and the island’s semiconductor industry. The still-mending US-China relationship was further strained after a Chinese spy balloon intruded into US airspace earlier this month and was shot down by US forces. A visit to Taiwan by a delegation of US lawmakers at this moment may incur opposition and dissatisfaction from China.

“I look forward to learning more about Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the economic ties between Taiwan and my own Silicon Valley region,” Congressman Khanna said in a statement. As a co-sponsor of the CHIPS and Science Act, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is critical to my district. At that time, I also plan to affirm the One-China policy and make it clear that we want to do everything we can to prevent military conflict.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), a Democratic Representative from California, It is also the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, which Congress recently created A member of the Communist Party. In addition, Khanna is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies and Information Systems (CITI).

Mr. Khanna was joined on the Taiwan trip by a bipartisan group of lawmakers including Representative Tony Gonzales, Republican of Texas, Representatives Jake Auchincloss (D) of Massachusetts and Jonathan Jackson (D) of Illinois.

Beijing has long viewed any overtures to Taiwan by U.S. officials or other countries as a threat.

China reacted angrily to Ms. Pelosi’s visit.

China has retaliated by carrying out unprecedented large-scale live-fire military exercises around Taiwan, sending warships into the Taiwan Strait and other surrounding seas, deploying fighter jets over the island and firing missiles through its airspace as part of what China calls “drills.”

Since Speaker Pelosi’s high-profile visit, a number of other congressional delegations have visited Taiwan to meet President Tsai Ing-wen, but the response from Beijing does not appear to be as strong.

“China should not use any visit as an excuse to intensify its actions around Taiwan,” a senior State Department official said Friday.
