It has been more than nine months since Russia-Ukraine War, a regional war that has affected the world since the spring of this year. The Russian army has not been able to conquer Ukraine before winter, and the 44-year-old Ukrainian President Volodydyr Zelensky and the “Spirit of Ukraine” have been selected as the Person of the Year in 2022 by Time magazine.

According to Agence France-Presse, Edward Felsenthal, managing editor of TIME magazine, described Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelensky’s insistence on staying in the capital Kiev to rally the country’s centripetal forces as “decisive” and the most impressive choice this year.

Since the Russian military invaded Ukraine on February 24, Zelensky has not only given away his position, but also actively sought international recognition and support by giving speeches every day. “His information warfare changed the geopolitical weather system and set off a wave of action that swept the globe,” Felsenthal said.

“To prove that courage can be as contagious as fear, to inspire people to unite in defense of freedom, to remind the world of the fragility of democratic peace — Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine are Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2022,” Felsenthal declared. Felsenthal adds: “Whether the fight in Ukraine inspires hope or fear, Zelensky inspires the world in a way we haven’t seen in decades.”

Time magazine’s Person of the Year cover showed Mr. Zelensky at center, wearing his trademark military green camouflage instead of a suit, surrounded by dozens of people, some holding Ukrainian flags to represent the Ukrainian spirit and depicting Iryna Kondratova, the head of obstetrics and gynecology who delivered countless babies during the bombing. People like Ievgen Klopotenko, the Kiev cook who called on his colleagues and provided free borscht to victims, and Olga Rudenko, the editor of the Kiev Independent, who put himself on the front line.

In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who started the Ukrainian-Russian war, was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2007; Musk, the Tesla founder and new boss of Twitter, who was expected to be the man of 2021, was not re-elected.
