To celebrate the Double Tenth Day thousands raise flags in Queens

The Chinese community in Queens, New York, held a flag-raising ceremony at Flushing No. 20 Elementary School on the morning of September 8 to celebrate the 111-year Double 10th National Day of the Republic of China. The director of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, Li Guangzhang, and the chairman of CCBA, Zeng Waikang, attended the ceremony. State Senators Toby Ann Stavisky and State Representative Kim Tae-seok made speeches thanking Taiwanese immigrants for their contributions to the region.

With the pandemic slowing down, this year’s flag-raising ceremony in Queens drew nearly 1,000 people, with no restrictions on the number of people and no need to wear masks. The event was opened by Three Princes, followed by a flag guard and a performance by an honor guard. After the national anthem of the United States and the National anthem of the Republic of China, the Stars and Stripes and the Blue Sky Flag were hoisted.

Looking back on the past year, Li said that US-Taiwan relations have continued to make progress. President Biden reiterated his commitment to Taiwan’s security on many occasions, stressed his support for peace across the Taiwan Straits in the UN General Assembly session, and opposed any action to change the one-sided status quo. The 21st Century Trade Initiative announced in June this year is a preparation for future US-Taiwan trade agreements. He thanked the overseas Chinese for their tireless efforts and contributions to US-Taiwan relations.

Lin Han-Yau, 19, from Pingtung, Taiwan Province, stood out from more than 40 other students from Southeast Asia three months ago as a freshman at West Point with nearly perfect SAT scores and excellent physical performance. He came from Shangzhou on the same day to participate in the flag-raising, feeling strong nostalgia.

A garden party and singing performance were also held at the festival, where people tasted Taiwanese food such as milk tea, bento and Lu rou rice. Traditional Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting and lantern making were also displayed. Other guests included Mr. Zhang Junyu, Deputy Director of the Holy Literature Office, Mr. Chen Yongfeng, Director of the Chinese Culture and Education Service Center in New York, and Mr. Lin Wei-Ting, Deputy Director of the Center.
