India and China took part in a military exercise codenamed Vostok-2022 hosted by Russia on September 1. India’s participation in Russian-led military exercises while the war in Ukraine is ongoing is seen by some as a failure of US “wooing” of India. But analysts say India faces serious challenges as Russia’s rivalry with the United States and the West intensifies. They also point out that India has tilted significantly towards the US in the competition with China.

The Russia-sponsored Vostok 2022 joint annual military exercise was held from Sept 1 to 7 at several training grounds and related waters in Russia’s eastern military region. Thirteen countries, including China, India and Syria, sent troops to participate. More than 50,000 troops and 5,000 pieces of military equipment, including 140 aircraft and 60 ships, are involved in the exercise.

“India’s relationship with Russia is based on India’s own interests with Russia, which are very much related to defense, but also to regional security,” said the South Asia expert, who is also in the Department of Defense Studies at King’s College London. Another reason is that India does not want to cede Russia completely to China. So, there are a lot of reasons for India to participate because it was called by Russia. India decided to go despite the big problems with China at the moment because Russia was the country that invited India and India did not want to disappoint Russia in this situation, “he said.

Given the emphasis of Russian weapons, ponte thinks, although India has been trying to reduce dependence on Russia, India put together with the Russian helicopter production plan, and in April canceled from Russia to buy part of the helicopter’s plan, however, the ministry said the Indian in the short term can’t get rid of the dependence, so India will continue to keep contact with Russia.
