Pelosi visits Taiwan, multiple parties issue statement

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan at 10:43 PM local time on August 2, sparking heated debate.

A number of political parties issued statements strongly condemning US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan as a serious violation of the One-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, which severely undermined the political foundation of China-US relations.

The Democratic Alliance for the Progress of the People’s Republic of China strongly condemns Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan and sends a serious wrong signal to the Taiwan independence separatist forces. It also pointed out that the US political forces’ stirring up of the Taiwan question is a habitual technique to create turbulence and disaster around the world, in order to serve the US hegemonic self-interest. The New Democratic Party pointed out that Pelosi and the US congressional delegation supported the “Taiwan independence” elements, supported the Taiwan authorities’ deviation from the “1992 Consensus” and attempted to “make China in Taiwan”.

The US politicians’ willful actions have seriously harmed China-Us relations, and the party fully supports and coordinates with all necessary measures taken by the central and SAR governments. The Liberal Party criticized Pelosi for ignoring China’s repeated stern warnings and using the outdated Cold War mentality to “make China under Taiwan” on the Taiwan issue, constantly challenging China’s bottom line and seriously undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the entire Asia-Pacific region. It urged the US side to recognize the facts and abide by the One-China principle.

Former Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan does not serve the human rights, democracy and freedom of the Taiwanese people, but the interests of the Americans.

Speaking at an event on national security education, Mr. Leung said every country has the need and means to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests.

Mr. Leung stressed that the concept and understanding of national security are acquired by learning, not by being born. Therefore, young people in Hong Kong have the need to learn and the education sector has the responsibility to teach.

He hoped that the people of Hong Kong, especially young people, would be more aware of the changes in national security and related issues as well as international relations. They are experiencing profound changes in the world that have not been seen in a century and are developing rapidly.
