In contrast to the current wave of global opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Chinese officials have remained friendly to Russia. And Canada’s support for Ukraine is clear, even the Wall of the Canadian embassy in China, there are signs of support for Ukraine. But some Chinese Netizen have attacked the move.

“We are with Ukraine” and “We support Ukraine” were hung on the outer wall of the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. The Ukrainian flag was also raised inside the embassy. Staff of the Canadian embassy in Beijing also took photos with pro-Ukraine slogans, which were widely shared on social media.

The Canadian embassy’s move was generally well received on Twitter, but it was a different story on China’s Weibo microblogging service. While some people call Canada “awesome”, others criticize and abuse Canada. Meanwhile, a pro-Ukraine sign outside the Canadian embassy in Beijing was spray-painted with the words F**K NATO in red, insulting the alliance.

A sign outside the Canadian embassy in Beijing on Tuesday in support of Ukraine was spray-painted with the words F**K NATO in red, insulting the alliance.

Canada commentators Li Lifu, said he is proud of the Canadian government behavior, know China’s pro-Russian, anti-American, against NATO, but without fear: “mean in the other side of the front, a clear statement of our country’s position, it is very appropriate, that is to say we have no firmly on Ukraine side. In China, ordinary people how are they brainwashed? It can’t be helped. It’s sad.”

Li Liev felt sincere admiration for those people in China who bravely spoke out in support of Ukraine. For example, Peng Peiyu, a rights activist from Hunan province, led an anti-war protest appeal, calling on aspiring people to join him in front of the Russian embassy in Beijing. Reporters called Peng Peiyu, Beijing time 3 noon he told reporters: “I can not talk now, you know what I mean?” He then hung up the line, reporters later to call again, but the phone has become empty.

Peng Peiyu, a citizen from Hunan province, calls for an anti-war protest.Yang Zili, a pro-democracy activist living in the United States, is concerned about Peng’s case. He says China tightly controls public opinion and behavior. He says voices that do not conform to the tone of government policy are blocked, and attempts to organize protests are seen as an eyesore. “It is very unlikely that the Chinese government will allow people to spontaneously organize such protests, let alone against Russia, even if it is propagated by the Communist Party, such as people spontaneously organizing anti-Japanese activities, then the government will stop them. Indeed, it is hard for us to expect mass rallies and protests.”

“Some Chinese netizens should keep their heads up,” Yang said. “In the past, the authorities allowed Pink to enthusiastically praise Russia, but now the official position is changing. Apparently, the authorities are finding this war difficult to resolve and fear that they, too, will be buried with Russia.”

Many people on Weibo criticized Canada for supporting Ukraine.
Li liffe also believes that The Chinese authorities should be treading on thin ice, watching the escalation of western sanctions against Russia, more reluctant to use force against Taiwan.

At the same time, maj. Gen. Mike Wright, head of The Canadian Forces Intelligence Command, testified for the first time before a parliamentary defence committee about the concerns of western Intelligence agencies about a possible war over Taiwan: “A week ago, we were very worried about whether China would take the opportunity to launch overseas military operations, especially against Taiwan. I hope that with the reaction of the international community, especially NATO and the West, China will suspend any future hegemony plans they have.”

Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, sounded a warning on the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling for the international community to stop it or give permission for other countries to do the same.
