On Jan 7, 2022, a high-profile case involving a male teacher molesting several male students in China was decided at the first trial.

The Chenghua District People’s Court in Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, sentenced liang Gang, a teacher, to eight years in prison for compulsory indecency and banned him from engaging in education or training for five years after his sentence is completed or he is released on parole, the people’s Court said On Wednesday.

As sexual assaults in China have come under increasing scrutiny, the case, involving several men and minors, has also attracted public attention. China’s CCTV News reported earlier that this was the first case in China in which a male teacher “molested male students over the age of 14 on a large scale” and entered criminal justice proceedings.

One of the male students involved in the case said in an interview that he was “disappointed and unacceptable” that the verdict was the first of its kind and showed that the law was still not strong enough to protect him.

According to the letter, more than 20 lianggang victims have been counted, covering the period from 2010 to 2020. Chengdu’s Chenghua District Procuratorate prosecuted seven victims for crimes committed between 2016 and 2018.

Wan Miaoyan, a lawyer representing the victims, told Chinese media that this was because China did not revise its criminal law until 2015, changing the target of the crime from “women” to “others” in the article of compulsory molestation of women and children, so that men over the age of 14 who are no longer children are also subject to the law.

At the same time, allegations of sexual assault and related cases have come under increasing scrutiny in China in recent years, and the trial has sparked much discussion online in China.

On August 17, 2021, before the second trial of the case, the weibo topic # chengdu teacher molesting 20 boys will be heard # attracted more than 200 million views and 14,000 discussions. Many have pointed out that the case has focused attention on male victims, a group that has been less focused on sexual assault cases. The case has also sparked more discussion about the power imbalance between teachers and students.

“Both boys and girls need to protect themselves,” many commented on Weibo. “How can I live up to the four words’ being a teacher ‘,” wrote another.

Some netizens pointed out that currently rape victims in China are limited to women, and hoped that such incidents would encourage China to expand the target of rape victims to all people. When will men be added to the list of victims of domestic rape? “One commenter asked.
