On the 20th of November, hackers attacked the server for the website of Boxun (Boxun.com), a United States-based provider of news from China. A new hard drive had to be installed.

Boxun has long been a target of such attacks. Since February 2011, after publishing “Jasmine Notice,” Boxun has suffered at least five severe DDoS attacks. Over the past few years, hackers have managed to enter the Boxun’s server and steal information.

Some stolen information was used by Beijing police against Mr. Xiang Nan-Fu, who was then accused of publishing numerous articles on Boxun and was arrested in May 2014.

In April 2012, after reporting Zhou Yong-Kang’s corruption case, the registrar of Boxun.com received an anonymous letter in English warning that the service provider would suspend Boxun’s DNS resolution.

A few hours later, the service provider suffered a powerful DDOs attack and asked Boxun to remove its domain name. The incident was widely reported and millions of domains were affected by the cyber attack.

Boxun is uncertain if this attack was Beijing-sponsored or initiated by other politically motivated hackers.
