Lin Zuluan, former director of the Wukan village committee, was accused of accepting bribes and sentenced to three years and one month and a fine of 200,000 RMB.

The verdict angered villagers, who began to protest.  Authorities sent a large number of riot police into the village. They arrested 13 “alleged leaders” of the demonstrations.

A bloody conflict ensued. The police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, wounding many villagers.

Video footage showed police breaking into homes to arrest people and villagers being pinned down on the ground, blood all over their shirts and faces.

Wukan now appears to be in lockdown and controlled by the authorities.
