After Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping ate at the Beijing Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop, it became famous overnight. Its social status increased and it even became a synonym for political affairs: whoever disrespects it will meet with disaster. The Guangxi Province, Guilin Municipality Television Station assistant director Cao Gaoquan exposed a local “Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop” and “Guangxi Province Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop LLC” as fraudulent copies of the famous shop in Beijing. The fake shop sued Cao, he was relieved of his duty by the TV station, and had no choice but to resign. Bowen News Agency has learned that the fake shop’s backer is none other than the Beijing Chamber of Commerce.

In August 2015 there appeared in Guilin a “Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop.” Because of all the publicity surrounding Party Secretary Xi Jinping eating at the Beijing branch, Guilin chowhounds rushed to try it. But it quickly became apparent on Web forums that this new shop was a fake. To get to the bottom of this, the Guilin Television Station News Department assistant director and “Guilin News” producer Cao Gaoquan went to the Seven Star District, Wulidian Road to investigate the meat bun shop.

Cao Gaoquan said that after he conducted his interview, he sent a message to Beijing’s Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop customer service. He received a return call from customer service saying: “This Guilin branch of Beijing’s Qingfeng Bun Shop is fake, we’ve already received multiple phone complaints and are trying to remedy this matter through legal channels.” The Beijing Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop posted on its official microblog site an announcement stating that the Guilin Qingfeng Meat Bun Shop is “counterfeit.”

After the television report aired, the Guilin meat bun shop sued the reporter, saying all its licenses and health checks were in order. The legal suit demanded: 1. that the defendant immediately stop taking actions that harm the reputation of the shop; and 2. that the defendant apologize to the complainant and issue a clarification on the TV station’s website to eliminate the negative impact and help rehabilitate the shop’s reputation.

Bowen News Agency has learned that although Cao’s report turned out to be true, the case has never been heard. The fake shop’s backer, the Beijing Chamber of Commerce, has a powerful political patron.

Not only wasn’t the meat bun shop punished by the local Administration of Industry and Commerce, but recently a different department of the television station produced a positive show on the shop. Local public security-related media reported that the meat bun shop was of public benefit. The television station won’t let negative news be reported on the meat bun shop.
