Rumors cause a riot over a dead body

Xingzi Township, Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province: On Friday, June 19, 2015, thousands of people reacting to a rumor overturned police cars and smashed the glass in the Xingzi Township police station glass.

On Monday, June 8, the parents of the deceased Cao Hui found injuries on her body. They suspected that she had been beaten to death by Cao Xian. On Wednesday, June 17, the Shuangfeng County government website posted a preliminary autopsy report ruling out violent death and sexual assault. Rumors spread that the police would seize her corpse and cremate it. This resulted in more than 10,000 people coming out to protect her body and surround the local police station.

On Thursday, June 18, dozens of anti-riot police cars drove to the Xingzi Township police station. People blockaded the police station and a long deadlock ensued.

At 4 a.m. on Friday, June 19, a video labeled “Riot Police Clash with People” was distributed. On the video people can be heard shouting “The police are beating people, it’s too intolerable.” The sound of tear gas being fired can be heard. It’s reported that the riot police used chili pepper spray and beat people with batons, injuring dozens.
