During the sensitive June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre anniversary period, overseas media workers suffered network attacks they believe were from the Chinese Communist Party.

New York-based Chinese media worker Wen Yunchao (Northern Wind) posted a message on Twitter on June 4 confirming that his home Internet connection received a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack. A Boxun editor based in New York was also subjected to such an attack. In order to work they had to use a public network.

Wen Yunchao published material saying that the attack was Chinese government-organized. He said “Everyone can imagine, given today’s sensitive June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre anniversary, where the attack originated.”

In recent days Boxun’s article distribution, comments, and submission systems have been subjected to spam attacks. Its reporting mailbox was flooded with tens of thousands of suspiciously similar reports.
