Activist Li Huanjun evades surveillance and arrives in the United States

Li Huanjun, who advocated for the rights of people facing eviction and forced demolition of their homes, managed to evade surveillance by Chinese police to arrive on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015 in Washington D.C. She had been arrested in July 2013 in Beijing, along with other activists associated with the New Citizens’ Movement, a collective of human rights activists in China..

Li Huanjun was born in January 1975. She worked in preschool education in Beijing. In late 2011, authorities began the process of forcibly demolishing her house and that of her sister in Pomegranate Village, Fengtai District in Beijing.  Li began her activism after that and was known on the Internet as “Pomegranate.”
